If you are in New York City and looking for a outing here’s a suggestion: Wave Hill Garden in the Bronx.

We were there on a bright morning this week and it was glorious. It really is one of the world’s great outdoor works of art with 28 acres of gardens, and woodlands. And with the view out over the Hudson to the Palisades, the setting is glorious – and all just twelve miles or so from midtown Manhattan.

Each carefully tended area is a delight and there’s a pleasantly shaded terrace to ake refreshment after your exploratory stroll. There’s usually an art exhibit in the house and right now there’s a lovely selection of work –  Cultivating Eden – by Rebecca Allan whose paintings are inspired by the garden, its plants, and the people who tend them.

Here are a few pics to tempt you into considering a visit or just enjoy a vicarious and virtual trip.

  • Great insights on the relationship between art and nature. Your post was a joy to read - thanks for sharing!"

  • nice pics and paintings; what a salubrious visit it must have been; I like gardens, even my little garden out the front and my bustling honeysuckle bush out the back which the birds go bonkers over :)

  • Wave Hill is a gorgeous place, when I lived in Riverdale that was a frequent little jaunt. Thanks for the memories...

  • It looks very nice and would love to visit if it was not so far. Apart from the flowers, the views very nice too. Although I am a horrible gardener I do very much appreciate things that grow. Virtual is the only way I go these days! Thank you for this.

  • Thanks for the post and link. I didn't find much history about Wave Hill Garden on the link, but other sites showed it was developed over 100 years ago, and was guested by the likes of Teddy Roosevelt.

  • Find solace in the calm and beauty nature has to offer with thanks to all who create it and make it as accessible as they can. Thanks to R and R for bringing this to London.
